Schoolin' With My Homies: August Journaling Adventures

My adventures in homeschooling my kiddos.

August Journaling Adventures with Finn

As summer begins winding down, August brings a perfect opportunity to embrace creativity, reflection, and lots of fun with journaling! For Finn, journaling isn't just writing; it's a colorful adventure filled with drawing prompts, Bible verses, bucket lists, and more. Here’s how we’re making August journaling extra special:

Drawing Prompts: Every day starts with imagination! Finn loves to sketch his favorite ocean animals, create scenes from books we've read, or even doodle something funny from his dreams. Drawing prompts like "Design your dream underwater city" or "Illustrate a summer storm" keep his creativity flowing.

Journaling Prompts: We include questions and topics that encourage deeper thinking like, "What was your favorite part of today and why?" or "If you could invent a new ice cream flavor, what would it be?" These prompts help Finn reflect and express himself clearly.

Bible Verses: To nourish his spirit, Finn writes out or illustrates Bible verses. This month, verses like Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me") help build confidence as he approaches the new homeschool year.

Coloring Pages: Who doesn't love coloring? August means ocean-themed coloring pages, funny back-to-school scenes, or calming nature pages. It's a peaceful break in our journaling routine.

Bucket Lists & Activity Lists: We create an August Bucket List filled with activities like backyard camping, stargazing, visiting the local farmers market, or making homemade popsicles. Checking off each activity brings so much satisfaction!

Reminders for the Month: Finn keeps track of important dates, homeschool co-op meetings, and family birthdays. A small, illustrated calendar helps him manage his own schedule independently.

Fun Facts & Adventure Prompts: Each week, Finn learns quirky fun facts about oceans, animals, or history. Adventure prompts like "Find five different leaves in the backyard" or "Go bird watching and draw your favorite bird" add interactive fun.

Daily Holidays: Every day can be special! Celebrating quirky daily holidays like "National S'mores Day" (August 10) or "Tell a Joke Day" (August 16) keeps every journaling session exciting.

Recipes for the Month: Cooking together is part of our journaling! Simple recipes for treats like Ocean Blue Smoothie Bowls or DIY granola bars get written down, decorated, and later enjoyed as snacks.

Jokes & Mad Libs: Laughter is essential! Finn loves filling in Mad Libs with silly words or writing down jokes to share with friends and family. August humor is all about summer adventures and ocean puns.

Journaling with Finn in August is about nurturing creativity, joy, learning, and reflection. Each page captures memories and growth, making our journal a keepsake we'll cherish for years to come.

Happy Journaling!

Schoolin' With My Homies: August theme is OCEAN!

My adventures in homeschooling my kiddos.

August's theme is... OCEAN! That's right! I've had a few requests (Mostly from kiddos) about having an ocean themed month. So here we are!
This month, we're trading textbooks for tide pools and worksheets for waves as we dive deep into an ocean-themed homeschool adventure! From the mysteries of the deep sea to playful tide zone creatures, we're exploring marine life, ocean science, nautical crafts, underwater stories, and so much more. Whether you're homeschooling a tiny tot or a curious tween, this theme is packed with hands-on fun, salty facts, and immersive learning experiences that will make a splash across every subject.
So grab your snorkel (or your glue stick) and get ready—the ocean is calling, and it's time to learn!

Foods:
Sand Dollar Sugar Cookies
Round sugar cookies topped with cinnamon and sliced almonds to look like sand dollars.
Ocean Jello Cups
Blue raspberry Jell-O in clear cups with gummy fish, whipped cream “sea foam,” and graham cracker crumbs on top for “sand.”
Sea Turtle Apple Slices
Apple slices arranged with grapes and chocolate chips to look like turtle bodies and shells.
Under the Sea Mac & Cheese
Macaroni and cheese with shell pasta, dyed blue with spirulina or butterfly pea powder, and topped with fish-shaped chicken nuggets.
Mermaid Pasta
Spaghetti noodles dyed with teal and purple natural food coloring, tossed with alfredo or pesto, and topped with shrimp or “clam” meatballs.
Ocean Water Punch
Lemon-lime soda, blue sports drink or Kool-Aid, and pineapple juice with floating Swedish fish and ice.
Tidal Wave Lemonade
Blue lemonade with lemon slices and gummy sharks, served in clear mason jars with striped straws.
Ocean Water Jello Cookies
Sugar cookies infused with blue raspberry Jell-O for a bright ocean color and sweet, tangy flavor.
Under the Sea Graham Crackers
Graham crackers topped with blue frosting or yogurt, sprinkled with crushed graham "sand," and decorated with gummy sea creatures or candy pearls.

Crafts:
Coffee Filter Jellyfish
Paint filters with watercolor, add streamers for tentacles.
Salt Dough Starfish
Shape and bake starfish, then paint and decorate.
Seashell Painting
Use chunky brushes or fingers to paint collected seashells.
Seashell Picture Frame Decorating
Glue shells onto cardboard frames, then paint them or add glitter.
Ocean Bead Bracelets
String large ocean-themed beads and plastic charms onto elastic.
DIY Coral Reef Craft
Use homemade playdough as the ocean floor and press in painted dry pasta (twisty, tube, bowtie) for coral. Add small plastic fish or beads for sea life.
Shark Porthole Suncatcher
Use a paper plate frame and clear contact paper with blue tissue, a shark cutout, and sea stickers to create an “underwater window.”

Sensory:
Jello Ocean Dig
Let kids dig through the “ocean” to find hidden sea creatures! Great for edible sensory play.
Saltwater Slime
Make slime with an ocean twist! Add sea salt or glitter to give it a rough, watery texture.
Kinetic Sand Ocean Bin
Use your hands or tools to sculpt the sandy ocean and find buried treasures.
Ocean Sensory Bottles
Create a swirling ocean-in-a-bottle. Shake to create waves and bubbles — great for calming or observation.
Beach Sand Slime
Mix slime with craft sand to make a stretchy, sandy slime that feels like the beach!

Activities:
Ocean Layers in a Jar
Layered liquids (honey, dish soap, oil) to demonstrate ocean zones visually and tactilely.
Sink or Float
Test objects in a water bin: shells, toy fish, rocks, etc.
Blue Water Transfer Game
Use droppers, pipettes, or scoops to transfer colored water between containers — builds fine motor skills.
Shell Counting
Practice 1–5 counting with large shells and numbered trays or mats.
Sand Tray Letters
Practice letter writing in a tray of blue-dyed salt or play sand using fingers or shells.
Popsicle Stick Sandcastle
Use popsicle sticks and glue to build a simple sandcastle shape, then decorate with sand or shells.
Ocean Yoga
Stretch and move like sea creatures — crab walk, dolphin dive, jellyfish jiggle.
Ocean Biome Model Diorama
Build a 3D model of the ocean layers (sunlight, twilight, midnight, abyss) using shoeboxes, labels, sea creatures, and lights.
Write an Ocean Myth or Legend
Use folklore-style storytelling to write your own tale about sea monsters, mermaids, or ancient ocean gods.
