Top Ten Tuesday: Comfort Zone? What Comfort Zone?

Top Ten is an original feature/weekly meme originally created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl that features a great bookish top ten every week.

This week's TTT is supposed to be books I read that are outside my comfort zone, but I don't.. really consider them outside my comfort zone. So I decided to do my top ten books (And movies) that I read (And watched) recently that I was super surprised I loved as much as I did.

Books:
An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good
I laughed out loud at this book so much. I had a feeling I'd *like* it, I didn't know I'd *love* it too.

Dinner for Vampires
I should've known I'd love this one. I love Bethany and I love One Tree Hill. This book made me so emotional, made me laugh, made me cry. One of my faves of the year.

Butcher & Blackbird
So I'm not going to lie, I read these for the trigger warnings. I had to know. Zero regrets. It was dark, it was sexy (But not over the top), it was funny, it was gross. I loved it.

Looking Glass Sound
I was so scared going into this book, I tried to read another one by this author and DNF'd it. It was so slow and weird and boring. Not a good weird. This one was definitely a slow burner, and it was definitely weird. But I loved it in all it's slow burny weirdness.

Ghost Mother
Another one I was super hesitant about. I'm not huge on slow burners. I have a really hard time if the book does not immediately catch my interest. Like has to be go go go. However, I don't know if it's because I relate to the wanting kids so bad it physically hurts, or what. But I enjoyed this one. It also gave me feels. It was also so slow burny, and kinda weird. But like a creepy dark leaves you speechless weird.

Strange Houses
I don't know why this one was so intimidating. I don't know if it's because of the hype, or what. But I was so scared going in. But I had no reason to be. It was slightly hard to follow and confusing, but that added to it I think. The whole book is so weird.

The No-End House
I read another Jeremy Bates book and *hated* it, but I wanted so desperately to like him that I tried this one and I'm so glad I did. I was hesitant and nervous going in thinking it's going to be so slow. Nope, not at all. Okay maybe a little slow, but I still really enjoyed it. It had my brain going CONSTANTLY.

Full Speed to a Crash Landing
Why this is a surprise to me, I don't know. I like sci-fi, especially spacey sci-fi. I thought this would be a meh book that I just read because it was a quick read and fit the challenge prompt. I was wrong, I laughed so hard and felt a kinship with the MC and all her attitude.

All Systems Red
Another quick read that I actually genuinely enjoyed. I have a hard time with some of the robot sci-fi, I find it hard to follow and get bored. Not with this one. I love the humor and the smart-assery.

Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries
Fantasy is SO hit or miss with me, and I had a lot of people say this one was slow. My mom included. So I was hesitant but I wanted so desperately to read it because LOOK AT THAT COVER. Drool worthy. And actually the pink one is even better but I'm too lazy to change it now.
I loved it, I love the faeries and the different fantastical elements. I love Emily and I love the faery king (I can't remember his name now, so bad with names). It's one of my favorite books of the year.

Movies:
I kinda cheated with these, because most of them aren't outside my comfort zone, in fact a lot of them are horror lol. But I was surprised by just how much I love them.
So I'm counting them! Also a lot of these are... very violent. I think that's saying something about me lol.
I'm not writing a blurb about each one. Just trust me on it.

  1. "Slow burny weirdness" LOL - I love it. And, actually, Looking Glass Sound is on my list!

I do enjoy sci-fi, but I've always been hesitant to read Revis' and Wells' books because I prefer my sci-fi not to be set in space (which is your case). But, I don't know...I might try them, since the seem to be so well-received even by non-sci-fi fans.

  2. I don't tend to read books outside my comfort zone either. I ended up picking books that I said were "outside my comfort zone" but were more like on the edges of my comfort zones. They weren't books I typically honed in on but ended up reading (or want to read) for some reason or another.

Butcher and Blackbird is actually on my TBR pile and made the list as it's not my typical read either but I kept seeing it around and how much people were loving it, so I thought okay, I'll give it a try...then I bought Tourist Season too during a Target sale! Lol. I still need to read Emily Wilde myself. I love fantasy so I am hoping I will love this one as I own the whole series now. Lol.

    Here's my TTT

    Have a GREAT day!
